One of the main aims of the International Cricket Council is to promote and encourage the growth of junior cricket

The Hungarian Cricket Association shares this aim and placed it as a central aim of its inaugural 5-year plan

There are currently juniors (boys and girls) playing cricket in 6 locations: Bekescsaba, Budapest, Isaszeg, Szekesfehervar, Szolnok and Tiszakurt - see the Clubs page for more info

Contact Andrew Leckonby (+36 70 702 2360) for more info about junior cricket in Hungary and to find out how you or your kids can play

In February 2010 the first Hungary junior championships were organised in Szolnok and they were held again in February 2011

In September 2011 the first all-Hungary outdoor tournament was held - the HCA Junior Ten10

Various Hungary junior teams travel abroad every year - the first trip was to England in 2007 and since then teams have played in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Croatia (see the Results page for scores and reports)

Some juniors play in senior cricket matches in Hungary, in the HCL and Twenty20 Cup

Info about matches solely for girls can be found in the Women's section of this website

Junior cricket information
Youth Development Officer
Jerry Bloemsma
Most of the youth cricket in Hungary so far has developed under the stewardship of Andy Grieve at the pioneering Comenius School in Székesfehérvár and Jerry will now look to build upon this excellent foundation on a countrywide scale in cooperation with Andy
Jerry is originally from the Netherlands but has been a primary teacher in Hungary for more than a decade in Szolnok, Eastern Hungary
He has been tasked with drawing up a plan to help spread cricket throughout all schools nationwide, at the forefront of which will be the recruitment of willing volunteers to coach beginners' cricket in schools
Want to coach?
If you are interested in learning more about opportunities to coach in Hungary email info@hungary4cricket.com

We are looking for people to volunteer to coach cricket at schools (primary and secondary) in Hungary
You don't need to be a qualified coach - as long as you can teach the basics of cricket and make the kids have fun playing, you're the right person for the job!
We can help you in every way - equipment, coaching advice, finding and negotiating with a school
We are sure that many schools would be interested in having cricket as an after-school activity for their kids, especially if the coaching is carried out in English
Hungarian junior teams often travel abroad to tournaments, giving the kids an added incentive to start a fun sport
To express your interest please email info@hungary4cricket.com with a liitle background info about yourself - age, cricket experience, teaching experience, location, preferences, times available

Primary schools get learning and playing cricket

50 primary school kids in Tiszakürt got their first taste of cricket in April 2009 and now they have won their first matches after just three training sessions - the first-ever inter-school matches in Hungarian cricket history!
Robin Sperling, a Brit whose sons attend the school, was aided by HCA President Ferenc Zsigri and newly-appointed Youth Development Officer Jerry Bloemsma in the hour-long demonstration, which revealed some talented and enthusiastic kids.
On Friday 24th April two teams from Szanda CC in Szolnok (coached by Jerry at their primary school since September 2008) travelled to Tiszakürt and played two matches, which were both won by the new kids in front of around 30 spectators - read the report and view the scorecards.
After the matches both schools were presented with KwikCricket sets (thanks to sponsorship by Kancellar.hu)

Other cricket demonstrations
In the Apaczai Csere János Gimnázium in Budapest 30-40 students were taken through the basics on how to play cricket by Hungarian and expatriate coaches, a session described as "wonderful" by one of the watching teachers
Other demos to have taken place include ones at Eötvös Lóránd Tudományegyetem (University of Science), Semmelweis Orvostudományi Egyetem (Medical University) and various schools in Szekesfehervar
