Mezica vs Comenius, Motvarjevci, Slovenia, 26th July 2009

For the second visit of Comenius to the brand new cricket pitch in the village of Motvarjevci in Slovenia, the opposition were their old adversaries Mezica. Comenius stunned them back in August 2007 in their own backyard, then fell to them at home earlier in 2009, so this was a match with some history and some tension...

Following his success in opening in the match against Maribor here in June, Comenius captain Andy Grieve was hopeful of a solid start, but he scratched around before hitting a nice shot straight into the hands of long-off. Kristof Noll-Batek and guest player Domen Bohinc (of Maribor) didn't stick around for long, so Zoltan Mago came to the wicket eager to avoid another Motvarjevci golden duck.

After a few tentative strokes he gained in confidence and proceeded to smash sixes on both sides of the wicket to get to 69 runs, his best-ever score. Opener Attila Vakan kept him company with 30 as the score advanced, but once these two had departed (Attila caught behind off a top-edge, Zoli caught at mid-on) the score stopped increasing much and Comenius were all out for 128. That was six more runs than in their previous visit, but would it be enough this time?

Mezica soon lost some wickets, Grieve striking early, but the left-handed batsmen (most of the team!) were causing some problems. After Ales Pustoslemsek was out, the responsibility for reaching the target fell on the broad shoulders of his brother Primos. He proceeded to smash fours and sixes on the legside as the runs required gradually came down. Comenius needed a moment of inspiration and it came in the guise of a direct hit run-out by guest player Domen - he had only one stump to aim at from square leg but he got the job done and the Hungarian team looked safe.

However, the score kept ticking over and wickets proved hard to come by. Captain Borut Cegovnic came in at number 8, but that was probably a couple of positions too low as he ran out of partners despite a stirring effort. Zoli took a simple catch to end the match and complete his perfect day. Andy and Brigi Hotea both took three wickets in yet another perfect Comenius fielding display. They like this ground and can't wait for their next visit!
