Hungary XI won by 68 runs
The first touring team of the summer, MC3, travelled to Dunabogdany to face a relatively strong Hungary XI in a
30-over match. Although more used to real cricket pitches, the visitors soon settled in.
Amandeep Singh's unbeaten 69 (which included
12 boundaries) at the top of the order and captain Gabor Torok's 52 took the home side to a score of
237-6. Despite some good bowling the home batsmen rarely seemed troubled and once the frontline bowlers came off, the runs began to flow. Tushar Gandhi and Lucky Singh chipped in with five boundaries apiece to produce a total that looked competitive on the lively wicket.
In reply, MC3 (a group loosely connected through Magdalen College,
Oxford) could only muster 169 before they were all out with one over to go.
David Wigg showed his class with a fine 52, while home bowler Mark Bownas
was the pick of the attack. Tamas Torok weighed in with the wickets of both the stylish openers, while his brother Gabor cleaned up the lower order to confirm the comprehensive victory.
The scores at the mid-innings drinks breaks were only one run different (96-2, 95-3), so the final result doesn't quite reflect how close the match was. The main difference was the depth of the bowling attacks - once the frontline bowlers had used up their overs, MC3 were pretty toothless, whereas Hungary's line-up was relentlessly accurate and tight. MC3 also faded in their innings as the sun and the beer took their toll.
All in all, a great experience for the tourists and a great first match of the season for this particular Hungary XI.
