Baggy Blues won by 66 runs
Another glorious day for cricket and this time the pitch behaved itself, thanks to some liberal watering and rolling. Both teams were a player short, so young Ralph Bownas fielded for both teams at fine leg.
Andy Grieve's inswingers caused all sorts of problems for the Blues openers, but the wickets didn't come tumbling down for him and strike partner Kristof Noll-Batek - just Kaushik and Andrew Leckonby fell to great catches. Not only were wickets hard to come by, runs were too. Dominic Ward showed his talent with a composed 24 before being caught behind by Fanni Cziraky glancing to leg. Damien Naughton matched his score thanks to five boundaries and Matt Watson-Broughton hit a 6 and a 4 before being bowled around his legs by Zoltan Mago, who ended up with 3-19 off his 5 overs. Brigi bowled very well to return figures of 2-16 off her 5 overs, helping keep the run-rate down to under 4 an over, which certainly looked gettable.
However, although his players know how to bowl, within Andy's coaching of his Comenius players there has never been much emphasis on defending... After a massive straight 6 off Andrew, Kristof was clean bowled and three balls later so was David Berczeli. Mark Bownas got in on the fun with a wicket off his first ball and then came the third over - dot, wicket, 4, 6, 6, 4. Zoltan Mago was the 20-year-old to batter the astounded Andrew's bowling, but revenge came swiftly after a maiden from Mark, with Zoli falling to his fifth ball, his bat somewhere over his shoulder in his follow-through... The end came swiftly thanks to Mark taking four wickets in five balls, including a hat-trick off the last three of a match that was truly entertaining and hopefully useful in terms of the development of Hungary's young cricketers. They stuck around for another two hours to practise for their next encounters in the Mezica tournament in Slovenia.
Choosing a man of the match is difficult, as Dominic performed with both bat and gloves, while Andrew and Mark performed miracles with the ball, but for his all-round performance - his first 3-wicket haul and a quickfire 20 off 4 balls - the award goes to an up-and-coming, pure Hungarian talent who looks set to entertain the cricket community for years to come...
Man of the match: Zoltan Mago
