Comenius won by 7 wickets
Despite five confidence-busting HCL defeats leading up to this game, the youthful Comenius side knew that a good result was just around the corner, and it came in spectacular style with the demolition of a DCC team brimming with experience but underperforming on the day. Having been put into bat, the expat adults just couldn't keep their wickets intact and then a whirlwind arrived in Budapest's 16th district to collect the two points on offer.
Brigi Hotea, this season's top-performing female player, got the ball rolling in the very first over when she clean bowled Laszlo Kresz. Although she was taken out of the attack after Suchet Shenoy smashed 18 off her second over, she again showed signs that she has a great cricket future. Captain Andy Grieve slowed Shenoy and his partners down, taking two wickets from four miserly overs. A slick run-out from Viktor Voros disposed of the dangerous Greg Hensman, and a little later Shenoy's big-hitting came to an end when his partner declined the single on offer - a sad end to a fine display with the bat and a key moment in the match. Captain Angus McLeod came and went, caught behind off Zoltan Mago, as was Steve Anthony to end the innings and give Mago his third wicket. If Suchet and some of the other batsmen could have hung around, a target of over 100 would have been a whole different proposition to a target for Comenius of just 75.
However, Comenius had been here before, chasing small targets and losing, so nothing was guaranteed. The doubts crept in when Attila Vakan was beautifully caught on the boundary by Aneyas Moghe with the score on 3, but then fellow opener Mago went ballistic and quickly smashed 26 runs (including a six that cleared the tennis courts and almost dropped into a steaming cauldron of gulyas!) to take the score to 31, when he was run out - the only real sign of inexperience in a Hungarian born-and-bred player with huge potential. Bithin Roy and Viktor Voros calmly set about reducing the runs required with some stout defence against some very nippy bowling from Shenoy and Matt, punishing any loose balls. The third-wicket partnership of 40 runs was the highest of the match and was just reward for some great batting. Unfortunately, Voros fell with just four runs needed, but he had already done his job.
So, two points to Comenius in a match of less than 30 overs. Instead of going home, most of the Comenius team and some DCC players chose to stick around and play some partnership cricket in a fun and friendly atmosphere, with lots of big hitting and clean bowling to finish off a lovely day of cricket.
Man of the match: Zoltan Mago
