Comenius won by 4 wickets

Even though the league was all over for these two teams, thanks to their respective 6th- and 7th-placed finishes, there was still plenty of enthusiasm within Phoenix to set up a match and get in their cars for a last flourish before the cold weather sets in. The home team couldn't muster such gusto and could only field four of its own players, supplemented by two guests from Budapest and 5 on-loan Phoenix fielders and lower-order batsmen. With no wedding scheduled, the Zichy-Hadik Kastely opened its doors and lent its lawn to the cause of Hungarian cricket once more, and served as the backdrop for the coming of age of one of the Comenius youngsters...

Having been unable to reach their target the week before, Phoenix requested to bat first, but they were soon regretting that decision, when David Sutherland (who had hit a half century in the league) fell in just the second over. Captain Benjamin Lebor came to the crease and steadied the ship, taking the score past 50, only for his partner Robin Sperling (the previous week's half-century hero) to slice a drive into the safe hands of Shobhit Gupta at point off Lucky Singh. He and Kaushik bowled 10 overs between them, taking 5 wickets for 39 with their guile and sliding balls, to leave Phoenix reeling at 82-6 off 16 overs. On came captain Andy Grieve to clean up the tail, leaving his opposite number stuck on 35 out of a total of 126 all out. Lebor's knock was full of pleasing drives and appeals for lbw, but he survived till the end and was left to rue his lack of able partners.

Zoltan Mago, after keeping wicket for the very first time, went straight into the attack in the Comenius reply, hitting his first ball for a 6 and third for a 4. His opening partner Krisztian Szabo was bowled by the super-quick Gupta, but that brought Kaushik to the wicket and he helped add 46 to bring the score to 60 after 7 overs, most of them coming from Mago's boundaries and from extras. However, the first ball of the eighth over from Lebor proved Kaushik's undoing and he was soon joined on the sidelines by Grieve, who top-edged onto his visor to give Sperling an easy catch behind the stumps. Mago and Lucky Singh then put on 51 for the fourth wicket to all but win the game, helped by some missed catches. Unfortunately, after reaching his first-ever half century with a massive six, Mago was bowled by Lebor the very next ball, but he had done the job in style and was unanimously voted man of the match.

So, Phoenix's woes continue and Comenius are now on a 3-game winning streak. As for Mago, who turned 20 at the start of the summer, what next?

Man of the match: Zoltan Mago
