Mezica beat Comenius 2-1
The experience and strength of the veterans from Mezica in Slovenia overcame the youth and enthusiasm of the Comenius players in the first three matches of the Central European Native Cricket League. As no more matches are scheduled for this year, Mezica have become the inaugural champions!
Due to late withdrawals from some key players, Comenius were a bit depleted for the day and fielded two 15-year-old boys in their first match. But that is no excuse for what was a very disappointing batting performance from some of the established players. With only 7 or 8 in each match, the pressure is higher and this undoubtedly proved too much for some. The bowling was of its usual high standard, but until the last game there weren't enough runs to defend.
The first match got the day off to a crazy start, with Comenius capitulating to 27 all out and then taking two wickets in the first over to relight their belief. It wasn't to be, as Rudi Lasnik and Ales Pustoslemsek came and settled the ship, steering Mezica home in just 6.4 overs.
That was exactly the amount of batting time Mezica needed in the second match to reach a somewhat higher target of 59. This time, however, there were no wobbles, with Primoz Pustoslemsek hitting 37 and Aleksander Steblovnik 19. Barnabas Schneider had again impressed with the bat in the Comenius innings, but it was captain Andy Grieve's 24 not out that helped them to the improved score (including a 28-run last-wicket stand with Brigi Hotea).
It was Grieve again in the third match who kept the score ticking along, but this time he had support from Kristof Noll-Batek (17) and Viktor Voros (12). The last wicket fell on 77, giving Comenius their best chance of a win. Mexica looked untroubled at 44-2, but then Grieve got Primoz lbw when he turned to spin and the wheels came off, including a fantastic run-out from a throw by Hotea. Despite two caught behinds that were turned down, Comenius managed to snaffle the last wicket and end up 6-run winners.
Thanks to the poor batting displays by Comenius and the big-hitting Pustoslemsek brothers, three matches were possible, with cricket played from 10 to 5 on the lawn of Zichy-Hadik castle. With visits from the local TV station and the county newspaper, as well as the continuation of the friendship between these two clubs, the day was a great success and augurs well for the expanded version of the CENCL next season.
